Reflecting on 2023: A Simple Framework
If you’re like me, you feel way too busy to stop and “reflect”. It feels like an impossible task to slow down long enough to really think through the ups and downs of the year. What would that even help anyway? Well, I happened to find some old photos from when I did this exercise back in 2019, and I was blown away by all that has changed (both in me and within Sela Vie’s inner workings).
Someone once told me “as an entrepreneur, everything in your business is your own fault.” Which sounds really depressing at first, but when you think deeply about that statement, you realize how freeing that truth is! YOU have the ability/opportunity to change anything “bad” or “wrong” with your business. In a normal 9-5, you just have to live with and accept a lot of the hard stuff that comes with the job. As a business owner, if you don’t like something about your services, client communication, pricing, you just…..change it.
So, it’s actually incredibly important to audit your own business and lifestyle each year so you can remind yourself of your own agency in the experience of your day to day life.
Like that thought, but feel unsure about how to execute? Great news—
The next Supper Club (a Birmingham-based community for women business owners) event will center around doing exactly this type of guided reflection together. More on that at the end of this email!
For now, here’s a really helpful and simple framework to audit your business.
List things in each of these categories —
STOP (things you want to stop doing in 2024)
START (things you want to start doing in 2024)
KEEP (things you want to keep doing in 2024)
LESS (things you want to do less of in 2024)
MORE (things you want to do more of in 2024)
I would encourage you to list not just business things, but life things as well! I like to think of my business in terms of my entire life — i.e., if you had a really busy year work-wise, maybe you didn’t focus enough on friendships, so you want to go on more walks with friends. That will mean you need to create more space or time in your day to day for walks, which will affect your work schedule.
If you want to treat yourself to some dedicated time for guided journaling and dreaming about 2024, join us at Supper Club’s next event —
Join us for a transformative two-hour workshop designed exclusively for female entrepreneurs. Led by psychotherapist and yoga teacher, Jennifer Bartlett, participants will begin with one hour of gentle yoga and guided journaling aimed at reflecting on lessons of 2023 and casting your 2024 business vision.
Following the yoga practice, participants will debrief over a delicious meal with like-minded entrepreneurs. This time will serve as an opportunity to discuss your vision, exchange insights, and deepen connections within a supportive community.
