How to Organize Your Work—and Life—with Executive Functioning Coach (and Sela Vie Client) Cody Nall

Recently we reunited with a previous client for a website redesign reflecting her growing service capabilities.

Previously an IEP consultant with almost a decade of experience as a special education teacher, Cody Nall is expanding her reach to more kinds of people with more types of functional aspirations. Now, as an executive functioning + social communication coach and education consultant serving children and adults of all kinds, she passionately equips individuals and families for better quality of life and greater professional success.

Cody is your bridge to a brighter future, and is with us today to share her top tips for entrepreneurs, and adults in general, desiring increased productivity and reduced stress:

1. Set goals but acknowledge achievements—

  • Establish timelines and goals, but be flexible and adjust them as needed (you’re WAY more likely to stick to a fluid, forgiving plan than an all-or-nothing measure of success). And most importantly, recognize and appreciate both your practical and emotional progress! In today’s fast-paced world, pausing to celebrate helps keep you motivated.

2. Develop healthy routines, and then create strategies that will help you keep them—

  • We often overlook the power of structure and consistency, believing we’ll fall into rigidity. But, actually, by implementing healthy systems, you not only calm your mind but also save some creative brain space for pivoting around unexpected challenges without totally freaking out.

  • Once you’ve created a routine and decided on your applicable strategies, make sure to communicate its details with those close to you (family, friends, coworkers) to ensure accountability and alignment.

  • Routines could include a daily schedule containing designated times for work, meals, exercise, breaks from screens, housekeeping, and rest. Strategies could include reminder alarms, checklists, chore charts, apps for monitoring screen time, weekly calendars for designating certain tasks to particular days, etc.

3. Cultivate your ability to think critically and flexibly—

  • For example, don’t be afraid to try a new routine or strategy! It doesn’t have to be perfectly fine-tuned from the jump—if it doesn’t work as intended, you can pivot!

  • Rather than dwell on your “failure” to perform with consistency, modify your system to make it more desirable and achievable. For example, if you planned to exercise every morning, but are seriously struggling to wake up, consider either shortening your workouts or moving them to another time of day. Even if that meant you got a 15-minute workout each day rather than your desired 30 minutes, or 2 workouts per week rather than your desired 4, that’s better than the 0 you were getting when you couldn’t get out of bed! A win is a win. And once a habit is established, increasing it gets easier.

Cody believes that every problem has a unique solution, progress is more important than perfection, and empathy is the key to efficiency. Her personalized coaching and consulting programs help students, families + teams, and adults of all kinds
